5 Easy Ways to Use Light for Home Security

5 Easy Ways to Use Light for Home Security

Home security is a priority for many homeowners. No one wants an intruder to gain access to their loved ones and belongings. While you can’t eliminate the risk, you can greatly reduce it. One of the biggest tools you have is lighting.

Most thieves are opportunists. That means it’s not that they are personally targeting you, but rather you look like an easy mark. They want minimal hassle so they can break in and leave with less chance of getting caught. You can use this to your advantage. When you understand what a criminal looks for in a potential target, you can make your home as unappealing as possible.

  • Light Up All Sides of Your Home

This is one of the most important things Connect Electric can recommend homeowners do for security. The more light there is around your home, the harder it will be for someone to get close without being noticed. While many families have lights on their front or back porches, it’s important to make sure all sides are covered.

There also needs to be enough light to see things in the area. Powerful floodlights are the best choice for this application. You can buy fixtures with dual flood lights to cover more area.

This can also bring peace of mind in case you hear strange noises at night. It will be much easier to identify a stray cat or raccoon without going outside with a flashlight and putting yourself at risk.

  • Keep Landscape Lights on All Night Long

It’s best to leave your landscape lights on all night. This creates more illumination, making it easier to see what’s outside. If you’re concerned about utility bill costs, use solar lights. They have a cell, usually on top, that gathers sunlight during the day. Then they turn on at night so you can easily see.

Most models are designed to automatically come on at dusk. This is great because you don’t have to worry about forgetting to turn on your landscape lights. Use them along pathways but also arrange them in out-of-the-way places for extra illumination.

  • Install Motion Sensors as an Early Alert

Motion sensors are a great way to frighten would-be thieves. They also serve as an early alert system for you and your family. Even if you have a security system on your home, it may not detect someone until they try a window or door.

Motion sensor lights catch movement before they reach your house. When the light pops on, you know that someone or something is moving out there.

  • Place Lights in Out-of-Reach Places

Criminals don’t like lights, and they will remove them if they can access them. That’s why you need bright lights placed in out-of-reach places, like high up on your home just under the roof. If they can’t reach the bulbs, then they can’t easily darken your property without you noticing.

  • Use Timers When You Aren’t Home

Timers are a must-have, especially if you plan to be away from home. These devices can be plugged into a lamp or light and then set up to switch on and off at a set time. You can use them on interior and exterior lights to create the illusion that someone is there.

Make sure your family is safe by assessing your lighting. A few simple additions can significantly increase your home security.

How To Make Your Home More Eco-Friendly

Are you a person who cares about the environment? Have you been looking for ways that you can be more environmentally friendly? From eating more plant-based foods to reducing your use of single-use plastic to using more natural cleaning products, there are so many ways that you can do your part to help the environment. If you want more ideas about how you can do your part to help the environment, then here are some suggestions for things you can do that to help our wonderful planet.

Water Tank

A product that you may want to consider buying for your home that can be good for the environment is a water tank. A water tank is something that collects water and stores it for you. You can then use the water that was collected for your household needs. Collecting water is a great way to help the environment. You will be saving water that you can then use for things such as watering your garden.

If you purchase a water tank for your home and you plan on being able to get the water into your house, then you are going to need to purchase a water tank pump. There are different pumps that you can consider getting. One is an external water pump, and the other is a submersible pump. There are advantages and disadvantages to both types of pumps, so when deciding on which type to buy with your water tank, make sure to do some research. If a huge concern of yours is the environment, though, then investing in a submersible pump may be the one that you want to choose because they are more energy-efficient.

Other than purchasing a water tank because it will help you be more environmentally friendly, some other reasons why purchasing a water tank can be beneficial include that it can help you save money and that by conserving water, you can use it for different things.

Start Composting

People throw away so much garbage, but you can create less garbage by beginning to compost. Composting is a great way to reduce the amount of garbage that you produce because you will be putting food scraps into the compost instead of in your garbage bin. So, start doing some research on how to compost and start doing it. You can feel better knowing that you are helping the environment, and it doesn’t have to be that difficult.

Do you know why composting is better for the environment? The reason that composting is good for the environment has to do with the fact that when food sits in a landfill, it ends up releasing methane, which is a harmful chemical for the environment. One study found that “food waste in landfills is one of the leading causes of methane.” However, by not putting your food into your garbage, you can divert it from landfills, which means that there will be less food waste producing methane in landfills. So, get a compost bin and start composting today.

Energy-Efficient Light Bulbs

Making your home more eco-friendly doesn’t have to be that difficult. A simple step, such as purchasing and installing energy-efficient light bulbs, can help you use less electricity, which will help the environment. Energy-efficient light bulbs also last longer, which can also be great for the environment because you will use less and therefore make less waste. By using fewer light bulbs, you will also be saving money since you won’t have to purchase them as frequently. So, investing in energy-efficient light bulbs is an easy and affordable way for you to make your home environmentally friendly.

Start Using Natural Cleaning Products In Your Home

Many of the cleaning products that people use in their homes have harmful chemicals that are bad for the environment. So, put down those harmful cleaning products and look into natural products. You can make your own cleaning products to use for cleaning your home, or there are many options now for cleaning products that you can buy. There are even companies that are trying to reduce the plastic bottles that are used because many cleaning products do come in plastic bottles. So, do your research, and you will see that you have many options for natural cleaning products that you can use that are not bad for the environment. You can have a clean house and not be causing the environment any harm.

Reduce The Single-Use Plastic Products You Buy

Single-use plastics are very bad for the environment. The amount of single-use plastic products that people use can be a lot because so many of the products we purchase for our homes come wrapped in plastic or come in a plastic bottle that we end up getting rid of. A solution to this is to stop buying unnecessary items like plastic water bottles. If you want to bring water with you somewhere, then bring a reusable water bottle.

There are also bulk food stores that can help with reducing your waste, but don’t use the plastic bags they provide; remember to bring reusable containers with you. Also, there are now stores that promote zero-waste living, and that promote that you use reusable containers to purchase things such as cleaning products or food, etc. In order to help the environment, you have to stop buying things that are just producing a lot of waste. Start finding the ways that you can be more environmentally friendly, such as by using reusable containers, bags, etc.

Making your house more environmentally friendly doesn’t have to be that difficult. There are so many ways that you can do things that are better for the environment. These are only some of the ways that you can make your home more environmentally friendly, but there are so many other things that you can do as well. If you are looking for more ideas, then you can read this article on excellent eco-friendly hacks for a happier home. There are also many other ideas online. The Best Ways to Protect Your Home from Pests

No matter how much care you take, pests can become a problem for the best of us. Whilst you might normally think animals are cute – especially small fluffy ones – you tend to think differently when they’re sniffing around your kitchen, and digging little noses into your trash. Rats, bugs, and even cute mice, can carry disease and turn a beautiful home into an unhygienic nightmare. Getting rid of them can be just as traumatic, especially if you don’t want to set traps and then deal with disposing of the bodies. Instead, here are some smart ways to deter pests without resorting to killing methods, and make your home as resistant to invasions as possible – stopping the problem before it even occurs.

Ultrasonic Repellents

A high-tech approach to pest-repellent, these little devices plug straight into your wall sockets, and emit a tone far too high-pitched for the human ear to hear, but which scares little pests away with remarkable efficiency. Rather than having to clean up after pests and find ways to dispose of them, this is a brilliant way to deter them in the first place.

Structural Safeguarding

Mice have the ability to squeeze through the smallest of gaps, and if you have old flooring or skirting boards, they could be getting into your properly through tiny holes you may not even have noticed. One way to help prevent infestations – as well as having a host of other benefits – is to upgrade and replace any damaged or aged areas. Good flooring companies will know the best installation methods and floors to use that will fit snugly into your home and help prevent any unwelcome visitors.

Another way to deter pests is by smell. Now, this conjures immediate associations with horrible odors, just as likely to drive you or your guests out of your home as any animal. However, there are now some good options for smells which will act against pests without making your home smell quite so nasty. Peppermint oil has been well-documented as acting against mice; you can DIY your own treatments, or buy particularly concentrated sprays for a more intensive treatment.

A House cat

It’s the oldest trick in the book, but one way to get rid of an animal is to use another. Cats have been utilized since Egyptian times as pest control, and it is how they have spread across the globe; brought to England by the Romans, and then to the Americas by European settlers – all in aid of controlling rat populations on ships, and in new lands. Quite apart from companionship and a heated cushion for when you’re watching TV, cats will instinctively catch any pests that have already entered your property, and act as a great deterrent for those who haven’t.

Food Waste

Finally, and perhaps most obviously, the best way to guard against pests is to take good care of your food waste. Never leave waste open to the air – always keep it covered and sealed in bin bags, and take your trash out regularly to avoid the build up of enticing odors. If you have a food waste bin, it’s even a smart idea to keep it in the bottom drawer of your freezer, to completely prevent food from decaying until you are ready to throw it all out. This, along with the other solutions, should minimize any risk of pests and help you live in a clean, relaxing environment.

Safe As Houses – Defending Your Home Against Common Threats

For many of us, our home is a calm and peaceful refuge. One that stands between us and the hustle and bustle, and stress of the outside world. However, that peace can be so easily disrupted if our homes come under threat. Sadly, there are numerous threats to defend our homes against. Although the good news is there are tactics you can use to keep your home, as safe as houses! Read on to find out what they are.

One of the most prominent threats to your home is security breaches from the outside. In fact, these can take physical form from burglars, or a virtual way from hackers. Fortunately, there are strategies that you can use to minimize the risk from either.

Firstly when it comes to physical threats such as people breaking into your home, ensuring you have secure door and window locks is vital. Also installing security systems such as CCTV and alarms, a topic you can find out about at https://reolink.com/how-to-install-a-home-surveillance-system/ can help a great deal as well.

Alternatively, when dealing with threats of a virtual nature, IT security is critical. That means the network you are on is a secure one and that you use end to end encryption for anything private. Something you can read more about at https://www.thesslstore.com/blog/end-to-end-encryption-the-good-the-bad-and-the-politics/.  The use of firewalls and antivirus software can also help you keep your virtual home life as safe as your physical one.

Bad weather can sometimes be an extreme threat to your home. With storms causing untold amounts of wind and water damage to the outer structure and often the inside of properties. Happily, there are some steps you can follow that will help to protect your home.

The first is to make sure that you invest in a roof like the ones on offer at ddroofing.com/services/residential-roofing/ as they are made from the very best quality materials. Something that means they will be a robust first line of defense when the weather does turn.

Additionally, having a plan in place for what to do if you are expecting extreme weather in the location in which you live is vital. Something that should, of course, first prioritize human well being. Then also include additional actions like boarding up windows to minimize the risk of them smashing, as well as blocking up gaps under doors with sandbags to prevent water from getting in.

Finally, one of the most significant risks to your home can come from germs. Especially as most of the world find themselves in the middle of the COVID-19 crisis! Of course, the key here is to make sure that your home is as clean and hygienic as possible.

One way of doing this is to use advanced cleaning products such as antibacterial sprays and wipes, which are as the post at https://www.lbc.co.uk/hot-topics/coronavirus/which are effective against viruses as well as bacteria. Additionally, taking special care to wash your hand whenever you have come in from the outside is also vital. While regularly cleaning off high-use items like doorknobs, and tabletops can help to prevent illness from spreading. Thus keeping your home as safe from germs as possible.

Complete Guide To Sanding And Refinishing Your Flooring

There comes a time where our sleek and stylish wooden floors can start to lose their glisten! If you have reached that stage in your home, we are going to reveal everything you need to know about the different sanding and refinishing options that are available to you.

Everything that you need to know about sanding your flooring

Floor sanding companies are responsible for removing the top surfaces of your wooden floor. They will do this by sanding the floor with abrasive materials that have been carefully selected. Usually, floors will be prepared, sanded and then the process will be finished off by coating the floor with a protective sealant. But, why do people need floor sanding?

There are many reasons why homeowners require the services offered by floor sanding companies. Some people need their floor sanded in order to repair the damage or to protect an investment, whilst others may wish to change the finish sheen or the color of their floor. The list is never-ending.

Regardless of why you require this service, it is important to find the best company for the job. Make sure you seek someone with a wealth of experience, a first-rate portfolio and a glowing reputation. If you look for these three qualities you cannot go wrong. You shouldn’t underestimate how crucial finding quality floor sanding professionals is. After all, if they sand the floor too much they will decrease the overall lifespan of it.

What to consider when looking for a hardwood floor refinishing company

If you are seeking a hardwood floor refinishing company there are several different factors you must consider. It is important that this is a decision that’s not taken lightly, as obviously you want your floor to look great and last for a long time.

One of the first things you need to do is look for a company with a wealth of experience. The last thing you want is to be someone’s practice project. A hardwood floor refinishing company with over ten years’ experience is recommended.

In addition to this, you should also read testimonials that have been left by previous clients to see whether they have been happy with the service provided or not. This is the best way to get an honest opinion.

Last but not least, all good companies have a ‘gallery’ or ‘portfolio’ section on their website so that you can see the work they have done so far. It’s important to check this out in order to get a feel for the level of quality they provide. You may also be able to pick up some ideas for your floor as well.

All things considered, if you are looking for an affordable and effective way to make your wood floors look as good as new, this is definitely the best option to consider.

Stay Healthy While Working from Home

More and more people are working from home these days. It can be a convenient way to work and saves businesses money because they don’t need so much office space. Plenty of people can get their work done remotely, and many also work from home because they’re self-employed. If you work from home, whether it’s something you do occasionally or all the time, it can take a while to get into a routine. One of the things that can be difficult to manage is staying healthy when you’re working from home. You can find a few different solutions to help you stay healthy when you often work from home.

Create a Routine

Having a routine is essential when you work at home. If you don’t set yourself a routine, you risk either working too much or not getting enough work done. A routine ensures you work a healthy amount and take enough breaks too. You might want to take advantage of some of the perks of working from home, such as sleeping slightly later or not having to commute. However, it’s still best to have some discipline and avoid just going with the flow. You’ll work better and harder if you have a clear routine.

Prevent Back Problems

When you’re sitting at a desk all day, it can be terrible for your back. Sore shoulders, an aching neck, and other problems can arise. While this is the same if you’re working in an office, it can be much easier to do something about it at home. With a more flexible schedule, making an appointment to benefit from the best rated massage therapy provider in your area is easier. You might be able to save money by going at a less busy time of day. You can also make sure that you get up from your desk often and do some stretching, especially since there’s no one else around to see you do it.

Prepare Healthy Food

One of the advantages of being at home is that you won’t be popping out of the office to the nearest cafe, restaurant, or store for food. Instead, you can buy what you want and make lunch and your snacks at home. You can even use a crockpot and start your lunch or dinner in the morning, so it’s ready when you want it. If you don’t trust yourself to stop working and make lunch, prepare your food in advance so you can simply get it when you need it.

Get Out of the House

Feeling stuck inside can be a negative side effect of working from home. You don’t have a daily commute and don’t go out for after-work drinks. You should make sure you have reasons to leave the house at least once a day. You might get out to exercise, even if it’s just a short walk, to get groceries, or to socialize with other people too.

Working from home can give you more time to be healthy if you’re smart about the choices that you make.

Upgrading and enjoying our homes in the best way can be a great deal of fun, and actually, fun should be the marker that enables us to move forward with our plans and stay confident in our goals. If you can achieve that, then you may find this process enjoyable and more worthwhile than you had planned.

Renovating a home takes time, patience, investment and energy, but none of that should limit you from having a good time during the process. Does this mean you need to have a party each day you complete a little bit of work? Well, you can if you wish, but you needn’t have to. Instead, using this as an opportunity to better your approach and take chances you may not have thought possible can lead you to a better result.

In fact, we’d say that if you’re not largely enjoying yourself, you may wish to go back to the drawing board. Here’s some of our advice for helping you along these lines. Properly followed, it should also stop you from feeling obsessive over your progress:

A Home Face lift

A few means in which to give your home a face lift can dramatically alter its appearance, and help you see your home in its original light. This can positively or more accurately influence your renovation plans, giving you the chance to make more informed decisions. For instance, the best fence staining service can help you see your fences as they were originally thanks to essential cleaning services. Power washing your driveway or garage door can also add to this effect in the best possible sense. A home face lift can’t hurt from time to time.

A Creative Opportunity

Why not use this time to better curate your home renovation in the best possible way? For instance, you may decide to repaint the door and windowsill flower beds to help your home theme itself more appropriately. Perhaps you’ll use the renewal of your driveway to curate a better garden path from door to driveway using chipped bricks or freshly cut patio slabs and weatherproof garden lighting. Don’t be afraid to let your investments work for you, and to try and make dreams come true.

Establishing A New Normal

Establishing a new normal in your home, thanks to your renovation efforts, can be a great idea. Perhaps now that your children have flown the nest or grown-up you can now take off that staircase banister for an aesthetic upgrade, provided you feel secure in the safety risks that grows in return. You may decide to open up your chimney on account of all this messy living room work, allowing yourself to properly clean this environment with the use of professionals, and install the fireplace you have dreamed of for some time. No matter who you are, a little novelty can be a good thing.

With this advice, we hope you can better ensure your home renovation is cared for.

Cleaning Your Home Needn’t Be A Challenge

Pexels – CC0 License

Cleaning your home properly can be a fun task,, provided you give yourself the right methodology of contending with those duties. For some who have large homes or apartments, that last statement may have led them to snort with laughter. It’s one thing to read that you should have no problem, and it’s quite another trying to crest all of your belongings and commit to a deep clean of a large environment each week.

Yet even if you haven’t the largest environment to care for, cleaning your home needn’t be a challenge. In fact, it can be a peaceful and rather therapeutic part of your week, provided you take the time to prepare and ensure that you go about the tougher tasks with a considered approach. In order to make the home cleaning process a little easier, a little more fun, and even a comforting part of your day, something that many people see as a silly goal to hold in the first place, we’ll try to convince you with the following guided steps:

Equip Yourself Well

Make sure you have the right tools for the job. Even that can provide you with a worthwhile starting point, enabling you to ensure you’re not grievance or annoyed by a lack of ability when noticing a task you need to complete. For instance, vacuum cleaners are becoming more and more efficient, but it’s only when you see them side by side that you can compare the best options for the task at hand. Some people may value ease of use, some may value a multi-dextrous means of ensuring all surfaces are cared for, while others may simple wish for a quiet, peaceful machine they can use regularly. Some may wish for all three. Ensuring you invest in the right tools for you, to get the job done, is always a worthwhile use of your time.

Of course, equipping ourselves well means ensuring a range of safety implements are also used. Caustic soda, for instance, can help us unplug drains, while bleach must also be carefully handled. Rubber gloves, scourers, even filtration masks if cleaning a renovated space can be important. When you have the tools at hand, all that’s left is the need to care for this space. To that end, you’re sure to have a good amount of fun.

Split Tasks Into Easy Chunks

Split the tasks that you do have into easy chunks. There’s no need to clean your entire house from top to bottom in one sitting, or in one day. For instance, you may decide to invest an hour cleaning the living room today, tomorrow morning just hoovering and mopping the bathroom floor and spraying some disinfectant. Then we can attend to our bedroom laundry during the weekend, and perhaps put the hoover/dust and polish around once then. Little maintenance steps can help us keep on top of our home care when we have the energy to do so, and that will prevent it from seeming like such a huge task.

It can also be that making things easier for ourselves is important. There’s no reason to feel like you have to tiptoe around your own home, but simply washing your dishes straight after mealtime allows you to avoid piling them up on your counter, and the same goes with regular laundry washing as it stocks up. Soon this will become automatic, but for the most part, the experience will be easy.

Spend Your Time Learning!

Spending your time learning during your cleaning habits can be a great use of your time. Cleaning, for the most part, can be an ‘automatic’ task we can commit to without having to think about it too deeply. This enables us to place our mind elsewhere, be that through listening to educational podcasts, audiobooks, or other content you enjoy.

Perhaps you haven’t the time to read that new bestseller your friend has recommended to you, but you can listen to it for a nominal fee with a carefully curated voice actor delivering you the lines. After an hour you will be a good few chapters into the book, and your living room or kitchen will be gleaming. That way you will have doubled up on the time and made it more enjoyable to deal with, which can be a positive in itself.

With this advice, cleaning your home needn’t feel like so much of a challenge. In fact, you may even start to look forward to it each week. Don’t worry, we’ll keep that secret safe.

Practical Ways to Ensure Your Home Stays Pest-Free

Keeping your house clean is one of the best ways to ensure that your home stays free of pests. While this is generally great advice, a lot of people don’t really understand the best ways to keep their home clean and they might miss out on certain areas that they really should be cleaning, or tasks that they should be performing in order to keep their entire home clean and free of pests. So in this article, we’re going to give you some practical advice on how you can ensure that your home stays completely free of all kinds of pests.

Keep all of your food stored properly in secure areas

It’s common for people to leave things out like fruit in bowls or even flour and sugar out on their kitchen counters. This is a really bad practice and it’s important that you stop doing this immediately if you want to both deal with pests and also prevent them from ever coming back into your home. It’s vital that you find various ways to store all of your food to make it virtually impossible for pests to get to. So here’s some advice that you should be following:

  • Don’t leave any food out in the open regardless of the location. This means don’t leave food out on your kitchen counter, your dining table or even inside cupboards.
  • Make sure you store any kind of loose foods in containers when possible. For instance, a biscuit or cookie tin is a great place to store random snacks and plastic containers should be used whenever possible.
  • Storing loose food in the fridge is fine if you can guarantee that small pests like ants can’t get in. This isn’t common, but with some older fridges or a partially broken fridge, it’s possible for pests to get inside.
  • If you spill any food or drink, clean it up immediately. This will prevent it from sticking to various surfaces which could attract smaller pests.
  • Make sure areas where you store your food, such as the food cupboard or a pantry, are completely free of any holes or entry points that pests can use to get in. This can be difficult as critters like mice and even squirrels and gnaw their way into your pantry if they’re really hungry. To counteract this, you can store the food in various types of containers.

As you can see, it’s rather easy to keep all of your food away from critters and pests. The reason you do this is simple; to cut off the food supply for all different types of pests. If you leave food in the open or give them a back entrance to your pantry, then they’re going to wreak havoc and eat all of the food they can get their little hands on. If you want to truly avoid pests in the future and also deal with existing pest problems, the best way to do so is to make sure they have no access to your food.

Other areas of food that you should be cleaning up

There are also some lesser-known and easily-forgotten areas that you might be leaving food out. For instance, if you have pets, then there’s a small chance that critters and smaller pests might invade your pet’s food bowl and start stealing from it. This is unlikely as your pet will likely eat all of the food when it’s served, but there’s still a chance it could happen if your pet isn’t feeling particularly hungry or if you served them a bit too much food by accident. After they’ve finished eating, make sure you clean up their bowl so that there are no crumbs or little bits of food left for pests to eat.

You should also be clearing out areas of food waste such as your bins. This is important as a lot of pests are attracted to garbage areas given how much food is available and how easy it is to rip through the thin plastic garbage disposal bags. To counteract this, make sure you’re taking out the trash as early as possible and make sure all of your trash is inside bins that are a little difficult for pests to get into.

Lastly, don’t forget that pests also need a source of water to stay hydrated as well. If you’re leaving your tap on or leaving water in your pet’s water bowl, then it could make the area more attractive for pests. Drain water whenever possible (such as when you’re washing dishes) and make sure you look out for leaky pipes, sinks and other appliances that could be causing pools of water to form, giving pests a source of hydration. There are some pests that are also drawn to water such as mosquitoes and cockroaches, so keeping areas dry can also avoid attracting them to your home.

Dealing with specific pests

By following the measures above, you can generally avoid most types of pests from invading your home. However, there are situations where you might end up battling with a single type of pest due to a preexisting infestation or perhaps due to an issue with your neighborhood. In a case like this, it’s best to know your enemy. If you need more information about a specific pest, we suggest speaking to experts that understand the pest that you’re currently dealing with. There may be very specific ways to help prevent the pests from entering your home, such as using different kinds of deterrents.

In a worst-case scenario, you may need to use specially-formulated solutions in order to both get rid of the pests and prevent them from returning. Luckily, this is something that can easily be done by pest control experts or even with a little research. However, if you want a no-nonsense approach to pest control, it’s best to simply speak to an expert and have them get rid of the pest for you. This will provide the best results in the shortest amount of time. Again, this should be your last resort if you can’t get rid of them with basic preventative measures.
